Jana Strain Takes Back Another Pan American Freediving Record.
Dahab, Egypt. With strength and determination Jana Strain continues to prove to be one of the top female freediving athletes in the world. On September 7th, Jana returned to deep diving with a no fins swim to 53 meters (174 feet) in two minutes and three seconds, setting a new Pan American Women's Freediving Record. She broke the existing Record of 52 meters (170 feet) set by Mandy-Rae Cruickshank in April of 2009.
Jana was performing a Constant Weight No Fins (CNF) dive during the Triple Depth freediving competition in the blue hole. Jana is the 5th woman in the world to swim to this depth without the use of fins, while holding her breath. CNF is one of the most difficult disciplines in freediving. Athletes use a modified breaststroke technique to propel themselves to depth and back.
"I was very happy with my performance, I have been focused on the pool disciplines recently and I had only three training days and two clean competition dives in other disciplines prior to my attempt, an unusual way for me to prepare for the deep. It was lovely competing in the Red Sea, the water was very clear and warm. I was to able to perform in my Nero comp suit by Blue Seventy, made with Yamamoto neoprene, which was fantastic because of the speed that I was able to move through the water and I did not have to wear as much weight." Jana added two meters to her personal best in this discipline and she was 14 seconds faster.
Triple Depth is an annual competition hosted by Freedive Dahab. During the competition athletes must perform in all depth disciplines that do not require a sled.
